GEORGE TOWN - It was brother vs brother and it turned out to be fatal. And it was all over a handphone torchlight app.
Ooi Beng Ee, 67, had complained when he was awakened after his younger brother and family switched on the torchlight and shined the light at his face.
The 63-year-old brother, his wife and son then beat up Ooi. He was badly injured and died hours later at the Penang Hospital.
A post-mortem showed that the former factory worker died from bleeding in the head.
Ooi's wife, who declined to be named, claimed her husband was beaten with "sticks, bricks and whatever they could lay their hands on".
Ooi was reportedly asleep on a canvas chair at his house when his younger sibling and family used the phone torch to light the way as they walked to a neighbouring house in Jelutong Timur at about 8pm on Wednesday.
"They said they were using the light to see in the dark but they were shining the light at my husband's face," Ooi's wife claimed.
"My husband told them off and the argument started," she said at the Jelutong police station yesterday.
"My brother-in-law and his family are our neighbours. My husband used to quarrel with them but they would get back together after that."
Police have detained four people, including a 32-year-old woman.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the four suspects would be remanded until Wednesday.
Police believe the victim was attacked with sticks and punched several times in the face.
ACP Mior Faridalathrash said doctors found that Ooi had bleeding in the brain and bruises on his hands, legs and face when he was rushed to the Penang Hospital.
"Ooi died at 7.45am yesterday."
"Police have recovered three long sticks and a hooked stick," he said.
