Catering van plunges into ditch, killing two workers

North South Expressway

ALOR SETAR - Two catering service workers died while eight others were injured when a van skidded and plunged into a ditch along the North-South Expressway near Pendang here.

Nurul Najwa Mohd Naim, 15, from Kampung Hilir, Kepala Batas, and Muhammad Azrul Adli Sulaimi, 18, from Taman Tabung Haji, Jitra, died on the spot from head injuries.

Of the eight, five are seriously injured. They are Nor Aminah Diana Mohd Zamri, 18, Ku Zaharah Ku Sulaiman, 53, Nurul Ainis Ahmad, 15, Mohamad Shahrul Nizam Shahriman, 21, and Mohd Shahizam Shaari, 16.

They were rushed to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital after the 9.45am accident yesterday.

Acting Pendang OCPD Asst Supt L. Pubadi said the group was travelling from Jitra to Lubuk Getah in Pendang to handle the catering for a wedding reception.

“It is believed that the right rear tyre of the Ford Econovan punctured,” he said.

“The driver, in his 20s, lost control of the van before it plunged into the ditch beside the expressway.”

Nurul Najwa, a student of SM Kepala Batas in Jitra who was scheduled to sit for her PMR examination early next month, had only been working with the catering firm for a week.

Her father Mohd Naim, a security guard, said at the mortuary that he initially thought it was only a minor accident.

“But when I was informed by the hospital at about 10am I was shocked to identify her body,” he said.

Sulaimi Din, 50, the father of Muhammad Azrul, said he last saw his son on Friday.
