Caught on camera: Man beats girlfriend with hammer

SEREMBAN, Malaysia - Police have detained a 33-year-old man over a Facebook video showing him beating a woman repeatedly and several times with a hammer.

The video which was uploaded on Sunday, Aug 11 and quickly went viral, showed the suspect physically abusing the 29-year-old woman believed to be his ex-girlfriend.

The woman identified as Lim Pui Lee suffered 30 stitches to her head and was warded for two days at the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban on Saturday.

Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said the case was being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

He said the suspect was detained and later released on bail.

The video, which is currently making its round over the internet, has sparked a furore among netizens with many demanding the authorities to take action on the alleged abuser.

The incident allegedly took place at 10am on Saturday when the woman confronted the man at his house in Taman Jasper Jaya and accused him of breaking her car window.

When NST met her at her home in Taman Layang Layang today, Lim, a food trader in Jalan Lobak, said they were both divorcees and had been in a relationship for over 13 years.

She admitted they had been having violent quarrels and the latest incident was recorded by her 13-year old daughter who witnessed the fight.

"My relatives advised me to record a video the next time I was abused so when he started hitting me on Sunday, my daughter took out her phone and recorded it.
