China tourist drowns while snorkelling in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU - A China tourist drowned while snorkelling in waters off Mengalum near here.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Chen Shao Ling, from Guangdong.

Chen, it was reported, was snorkelling with her friends and their guide prior to the 12.35pm tragedy on Monday, said Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Habibi Majinji.

Chen was seen struggling in the water after she was hit by waves.

The guide who saw Chen struggling immediately pulled her to the shore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her.

ACP Habibi said the guide and boatman rushed Chen back to the Sutera Harbour Jetty here. she re­mained unconscious despite their efforts to save her.

The woman was pronounced dead at about 1.02pm after reaching the jetty, he said.

A post mortem is being conducted to find out the exact cause of death.

Chen had come to Sabah with her two friends age 28 and 29 on Jan 5, and were suppose to spend at least a week here.
