KUALA LUMPUR - City folks out for some last-minute Hari Raya shopping created massive traffic jams along many roads here.
Congestion has been reported in the city's arteries of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Ampang since early yesterday morning.
Motorists were caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic for almost an hour in some areas.
Shopping malls like Mid Valley, Sogo, Ampang Park and KLCC were packed with people doing their shopping. Wet markets in the city were also reported to be teeming with shoppers.
Motorist Vimala Nair said the Sentul wet market was crowded with people parking along the side of the road.
"I was caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Jalan Sentul for almost an hour," said Vimala, adding that she spotted a long queue at a stall selling fresh coconuts.
At Ampang Park, many Muslims working on the eve of Hari Raya took a longer lunch break to shop for baju raya.
"I have been so busy this month that I did not have time to buy my baju raya," said Nik Suhaimi, a clerk who works at a bank nearby. "Today is my last chance, so here I am."
In Masjid India, shopping centres such as Mydin and Semua House as well as the surrounding bazaars were teeming with people.
At some point, the crowd got so big that people were literally jostling with each other just to choose their Raya attire.
