SHAH ALAM - A cost control officer with an oil exploration company and his wife have been charged in the Sessions Court here with trafficking their Filipina maid.

Mohamad Afzan Azemi, 35, and Norazni Razali, 30, a finance manager, pleaded not guilty to the charge before judge Mohd Sabri Ismail.

They are alleged to have forced Joramie Garcia Torres, 31, to work at their house in Denai Alam here between Jan 23 and Aug 31 this year.

The charge, under Section 13(b) of the Anti-Trafficking In Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment up to 20 years and a fine, if found guilty.

"However, if the court grants bail, the prosecution requests that bail be set at RM100,000 (S$32,167), as the victim was exploited and injured," she said.

Counsel K. Murali sought a lower bail of RM10,000, as the couple had a young child who was still breast-feeding.

Mohd Sabri allowed the duo to be freed on RM20,000 bail in one surety each. He also set Oct 24 for mention.

The couple posted the bail.
