JOHOR BARU - A husband and wife who were fast asleep cheated death when their house in Taman Gunung Emas here caught fire in an early morning blaze.

Lee Yuen Pok, 56, and his wife Wong Wee Ping, 52, were startled by thick smoke in their house in the 7am incident yesterday.

Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Syed Nasir Syed Abu Bakar said the couple immediately rushed out of their house, but Lee sustained burns on his chest.

Lee was treated at Hospital Sultan Ismail while his wife managed to escape unhurt, said Syed Nasir, adding that a distress call was received at around 7.10am.

Syed Nasir said that when the fire engine arrived at the scene, the single storey terrace house was almost 80 per cent engulfed by flames.

"We believe that the fire started from one of the bedrooms in the house, but investigations are ongoing to determine the actual cause," he said.

In Batu Pahat, a furniture factory along Jalan Tongkang Pecah went up in flames at around 1pm yesterday.

Timah Sari department chief Misro Rusdang said 11 firemen were sent to the scene and managed to put out the fire within 10 minutes.
