JITRA: A three-year-old girl, whose mentally ill father allegedly slit her throat with a knife at their home in Kampung Tengah, Kodiang, narrowly escaped death.
Doctors at the hospital where she was treated said if the wound had been slightly deeper she would have been killed.
Kubang Pasu OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the girl's screams alerted her mother during the 5.30pm incident on Saturday.
The woman rushed to the room where the 29-year-old man had locked himself inside with the girl, he said.
The child had just come home with the mother and grandmother when the husband took her into the room.
Then they heard her screaming.
"Moments later, the man opened the door and came out with his daughter. His chest was covered in blood and both collapsed," said ACP Abdul Rahim.
He said the father, a mechanic, had a history of mental illness and drug abuse, and might have stabbed himself after allegedly slitting the girl's throat.
Family members and neighbours rushed the girl to the Kangar Hospital.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the man lying on the living room floor and sent him to the same hospital. He is in stable condition and under remand until Saturday. A kitchen knife was found in the other room by the policemen.
The man was said to have been depressed a week before the incident, ACP Abdul Rahim added.
