A day's jail and fine for former lecturer

IPOH - A former lecturer from Institut Teknologi Perak (ITP) was jailed a day and fined RM25,000 (S$9,600) for accepting bribes from two students as an inducement to increase their marks for the Mathematics and Statistics papers.

Wong Chee Wai, 41, pleaded guilty at a Sessions Court here yesterday to soliciting and receiving bribes from Nor Azmira Nor Mohamad and Muhamad Faezrul Udaman.

When Wong was charged on Oct 30 last year, he had claimed trial to all charges but he changed his plea to guilty yesterday before judge Madihah Harullah.

He admitted that he received RM140 from Nor Azmira in front of the institute's library at 4.15pm on Sept 14, 2011, and accepted RM140 from her as an inducement to increase her marks in the Mathematics paper for the first semester, in front of a classroom at the institute in Greentown Square at 3pm on Oct 12, 2011.

For the first two charges, he was jailed a day and fined RM11,000, in default eight months' jail.

Wong also admitted to agreeing to accept RM250 from Muhamad Faezrul Udaman, also as an inducement to increase his marks for the Statistics paper, at the institute at 4pm on Oct 10, 2011.

He was also charged with accepting RM300 from Muhamad Faezrul on Feb 3, 2012. He admitted to accepting the bribe on Feb 8, 2012.

For these charges, he was sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM14,000, in default 10 months' jail. The jail terms were ordered to be served concurrently.

Deputy Public Prosecutor A. Hafiizh Abu Bakar from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption ComĀmission prosecuted.

In mitigation, Wong's counsel M. Kathan requested for a lighter sentence, stating that his client had a wife, aged parents and a nine-year-old special needs child to look after.

Kathan said that after Wong was sacked from ITP, he was giving private home tuition and was not earning much.

"My client is also seeking treatment from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta as he is suffering from severe depression and obsessive compulsive disorder after the incident," he added.
