Dead banker's son to stay away till killer is nabbed

MALAYSIA - The son of the banker slain in a shooting last Monday said the Malaysian police have interviewed him over the phone and there is no need for him to return to Malaysia to assist in investigations.

Earlier, police had urged him to come forward to assist in investigations and not make claims or denials through any media outlet.

Mr Pascal Najadi, who is in Moscow, told The Sunday Times he is staying put for security reasons, and the police have agreed to it.

"I told the police that I do not know why my father was killed and that it is not safe for me to be exposed if I return to Malaysia," he said on Saturday. "They agreed with me and so I will stay here until the killer is captured."

But Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh told reporters on Saturday: "He is making denials in the newspaper and that will not help us solve the case. He should come to KL and help the police."

Mr Hussain Ahmad Najadi was killed after being shot twice in downtown Kuala Lumpur by a hired gunman.

The police believe the killing is linked to disputes over property dealings, but Mr Pascal Najadi has rejected that possibility.

A growing list of shooting incidents in the capital in the past week has the public worried, with the latest happening yesterday.

Ex-convict B. Balamurali, 36, was killed after being shot three times in his house in Cheras.

Another shooting victim, gold merchant Wong Foo Yui, 34, had stopped his car at a traffic light in Pandan Indah last Friday when two men on a motorcycle rode up and one of them shot him three times, including on the shoulder.

"I don't know why this has happened to me. I wasn't carrying any gold and I do not have any bad relationship with anyone," he was quoted as saying by The Star on Saturday.

Police said he is in stable condition.
