PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called on the Indian community to light up the lives of those who are in need of help this Deepavali.
"As we celebrate the Festival of Lights, where light triumphs over darkness and good defeats evil, let us not forget to light up the lives of those around us who need our help.
"Use this opportunity to redouble our efforts to better serve the community," said the Prime Minister in a Deepavali message posted on his blog yesterday.
Najib said Malaysia was very fortunate to be able to practise traditions that have been around for generations.
"Delicious food being served and the beauty of an illuminated house surrounded by joy is something that can be seen while visiting an open house by our Hindu friends.
"I believe this festival will be greeted with enthusiasm and goodwill because such a celebration can foster a stronger brotherhood and harmony among all ethnic groups in Malaysia," he said.
Najib added that the Government would continue to help the Indian community to ensure that they were not left out of mainstream development.
He said this commitment was manifested through numerous initiatives the Government had undertaken over the years such as the Budget 2016 and 11th Malaysia Plan.
"I once again take this opportunity to wish you Happy Deepavali or Deepavali Vaalthukal to all Malaysian Hindus in the hope that this celebration of light will illuminate the lives of all Malaysians to live in conditions of peace and harmony," said Najib.
