KUALA LUMPUR - Women should be encouraged to improve themselves with education even if they are housewives, says Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

The Prime Minister's wife said with education, they could play a positive role in the family and society.

She revealed that she obtained a Master's degree due to her mother's encouragement.

"We should get ourselves educated because we play multiple roles in our homes and society," she said at the Malaysian Chinese Women Economic Convention in conjunction with the 103rd International Women's Day celebration yesterday.

Rosmah also said the number of women in the business sector was encouraging, based on statistics from SME Corp.

One of the main factors contributing to women's success in business, she said, was the Government's well-planned programmes on women development, especially in the field of business and entrepreneurship.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who also attended the event, expressed his appreciation for the two women in his life for their support - his wife and his mother.

He said that as a child, he used to help his mother tap rubber and had come to realise the enormous role that women had played in the country's economic growth.

He urged women to take the opportunity to apply for the micro-credit finance totalling RM2mil that Wanita MCA chairman Datuk Heng Seai Kie had announced recently.
