Ex-Malaysian cop who received country's highest federal award dies

GEORGE TOWN - Retired Kons Fong Thien Kit, who was among the few recipients of the highest federal award, the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa, breathed his last on Tuesday. He was 76.

Fong, who was stricken with lung cancer, died at Penang Hospital here at 5.20am Thursday.

He was best remembered for his bravery in arresting an armed robber on the wanted list in Setapak in 1971.

Despite the gunman killing his colleague and wounding him, Fong managed to capture the dangerous suspect.

The award Fong received is equivalent to the British Victoria Cross and US Medal of Honor.

Family members sent him off during a funeral procession at the Batu Gantung funeral parlour. His body is to be cremated at the Batu Gantung crematorium.
