SERI MANJUNG, Malaysia - A former Kampung Jering DAP chairman, who went on an outing with friends, was unaware that it would turn out to be his last supper.
Wong Kong Ting, 56, an oil palm replanting contractor, was ambushed and gunned down in front of the family home in Kampung Jering here on Wednesday night.
At least two gunmen were believed to have attacked him and escaped in the darkness after firing three shots.
Wong, who sustained gunshot wounds in the chest, abdomen and hand, was known to be a generous man to the villagers there.
"He once forked out his own money to buy milk powder and groceries for a poor mother in need. His passing is really sad news,'' said a villager who wanted to be known only as Chong.
Wong was sent to the Manjung Hospital where he died about a hour after the 10pm shooting incident.
Earlier, when Wong returned home, his family heard what they thought were firecrackers.
They were unaware at the time that Wong was ambushed upon his return by the gunmen.
His wife, who was with her mother, children and a cousin, found the victim bloodied and groaning in pain on the ground.
Manjung police chief ACP Jaafar Baba said several empty bullet casings were found at the scene of the incident.
"We do not rule out the possibility of the involvement of more than one assailant in the killing," he told reporters at the Manjung police headquarters yesterday.
He said a special police team headed by Perak CID chief Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim had been set up to investigate the case.
