Family escapes injury as fire destroys home

SUBANG JAYA: A family of three were left homeless when their double-storey terrace house in USJ 11 was destroyed in a fire Monday night.

House owner, 54-year-old Surianna Teh Abdullah, said her family had just arrived home from dinner when they noticed that the power was out.

"We tried to open our automated gate but couldn't. When we finally got into the house, we tried to switch on the lights and but twice, the power tripped.

"We heard noises coming from upstairs. We thought there were robbers but then we started seeing thick smoke," she said.

The discovery prompted the family to immediately exit the house.

"Shortly after that, we saw a big fire. That was when my 16-year-old daughter called the Fire and Rescue Department," she said.

Subang Jaya fire station chief Norizan Abu Bakar confirmed that the department had received a distress call from one of the family members at about 10.11pm on Monday and that a team had arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later.

"We took about 45 minutes to put out the fire," Norizan said.

No one was injured in the incident.

The amount of losses and cause of the fire are still being investigated.
