Family push for son to take over Karpal Singh's seat

GEORGE TOWN - Family members and friends of the late Karpal Singh have started collecting signatures in support of his third son taking over his place as Bukit Gelugor MP.

Yesterday, they collected signatures of those who came for akhand path (memorial) prayers for the prominent lawyer and politician in support of Ramkarpal Singh (above), 38, at the Waada Gurdwara Sahib in Jalan Gurdwara here.

A niece of Karpal, who declined to be named, said hundreds of signatures were collected.

"Most of our family members and Karpal's supporters supported this decision," she said, adding that the petition would be submitted to the DAP leadership.

Among those who came for the prayers were DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang and his son, Penang Chief Minister and party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Two of Karpal's sons are elected representatives; Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and Datuk Keramat state assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo.

New Zealand journalist Tim Donoghue, who wrote Karpal Singh - The Tiger of Jelutong said RamĀkarpal was earlier nominated to take his father's place should Karpal lose his seat because of his sedition case.

The Bukit Gelugor by-election is fixed for May 25 while nomination is on May 12.
