KANGAR - Five boatmen had to use lifebuoys to stay afloat before they were rescued after their cargo boat sank off Kuala Perlis here.
The cargo boat had just left the Kuala Perlis jetty to Langkawi to transport chicken and food supply when it ran into trouble about 1.17pm on Thursday.
Kuala Perlis MMEA enforcement chief Lieutenant Commander Maritime Shahrizan Raman said a patrol team which was nearby rushed to the scene after they received a distress call.
"We reached there about a minute later and about 80 per cent of the boat had already submerged in the waters. Luckily, they have lifebuoys.
"None of them was injured," he said yesterday.
Shahrizan said the ill-fated boat, which was about 2.2 nautical miles away from Kuala Perlis, sunk at 1.20pm.
"The boatmen were brought back to the Kuala Perlis jetty. They then went back to the scene to recover the goods," he said.
