KOTA KINABALU - Foreigners who became voters after being issued Malaysian identity cards through dubious means caused only a minimal impact in the outcome of elections here, a veteran Sabah politician said.
The presence of these new voters would be felt only in certain constituencies, such as the state seats of Karambunai, Lahad Datu and Kunak, former deputy minister and MP Datuk Yahya Lampong told the Royal Commission of Inquiry yesterday.
"They would not have an impact in interior seats such as Tambunan," he said when questioned.
Questioned about allegations by various groups that the issuance of identity cards to foreigners was aimed at increasing Sabah's Muslim population, Yahya said he was aware of the accusations but he did not take the claims seriously.
He added that he came to know of the organised issuance identity cards only about a year ago.
