The incest and teenage rape cases recently reported in Sarawak appear to be the tip of the iceberg.

Human Life Service Miri, a group that helps troubled women and girls, said the situation was alarming.

"The number of reported instances is high, but there are many more young rape and incest victims whose cases are not highlighted.

"Their plight is even more pressing. Our group is willing to help the state Welfare, Women and Community Development Ministry find ways to tackle them," it said.

On Sept 21, the rape of a 14-year-old girl by her step-grandfather came to light after Sri Aman Hospital alerted the police.

The student, who is five weeks pregnant, injured her back while jumping from the first floor of her hostel in an alleged suicide bid.

Before police could nab the 54-year-old suspect on Friday, he died after drinking pesticide.

Bernama reported Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim as saying that the number of incest cases in Sarawak needed to be urgently addressed.

"A total of 3,272 incest cases were reported from 2006 to 2015, and the majority of the victims are aged 13 to 15," she said.
