Haze update: API for Malaysia hits unhealthy level

ALOR STAR - Southern Kedah is blanketed by haze as the Air Pollutant Index in Sungai Petani hit the unhealthy level of 101 at 12 noon before deteriorated to 103 an hour later.

The Department of Environment (DOE) monitoring station in Bakar Arang, Sungai Petani showed that the API reading had shot up from 94 in 6am to 100 at 11am, before breaking the unhealthy level by 12noon.

The API in Langkawi and Alor Star also showed significance increase from 77 and 71 at 6am today to 92 and 82 respectively.

State Health Department director Dr Ismail Abu Taat said the department was aware of the situation and urged those in the high risk group such asthmatic patients to avoid from taking part in outdoor activities.

He also advised the public to avoid carrying out any open burning.

In Kangar, Perlis, the API reading also showed an increment from 71 at 6am today to 82 as at 2pm today.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy), and 301 and above (hazardous).
