KOTA KINABALU - A father is thankful that he had just time to save a disabled daughter and two young grandchildren before their house was destroyed in a fire at Kampung Likas near here.
While 64-year-old Akil Idris could not save any documents or valuables, he was grateful that all his family members were safe.
"In the chaos all I could think of was my daughter and my grandchildren," he said.
He was seen carrying his 30 year-old daughter while holding on to his grandchildren aged 10 and 14, moments before his two storey concrete-wooden house was completely engulfed in flames.
The noon fire on Thursday destroyed 18 houses leaving 18 people homeless.
Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Services Department chief Hamsa Isnurdini said the fire spread rapidly among the wooden houses that were built close to each other.
He said firemen managed to bring the blaze under control within 40 minutes and had to pump water from nearby drains due to low pressure in the pipes.
No casualties were reported in the fire.
