JOHOR BARU: Police here are investigating a video purportedly showing one of their officers brandishing his weapon and trying to extort money from a man.

Johor deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said the "officer" in the video, which has gone viral, claimed to be a senior police officer in the Kulai district.

"The video was uploaded on Facebook at 10.54am where a man is seen showing a gun to another man inside a car.

"The act has tarnished the reputation and the good name of the police especially in Johor," he said in a statement here on Tuesday (Jan 29).

He added that a full investigation was underway and stern action would be taken against police personnel, regardless of rank, if they are found to have committed the offence.

"We also hope that the person involved in the video would come and lodge a police report so that we can investigate the case," he said.

In the two-minute video, the "police officer" is seen extorting money from the victim whose younger brother is in jail. The officer, who also claims to be related to a senior cop in the Kulai Narcotics Department, allegedly demands RM50,000 (S$16,500) from the victim to keep "his brother alive".
