JOHOR BARU - Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has ended his bachelorhood after tying the knot with 21-year-old Che' Puan Khaleeda Bustamam in a ceremony held at Istana Bukit Serene here.

The akad nikah (solemnisation of marriage) was conducted in a private ceremony attended by close family members from both sides at around 10am yesterday.

Tunku Ismail, who is also the Johor FA president, arrived in a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce Phantom together with police outriders.

His parents Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah and his five siblings attended the ceremony.

Earlier, Johor leaders including Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin and members of the state legislative councils were seen arriving at the palace at around 8am.

Johor Mufti Datuk Mohd Tahrir Samsudin conducted the akad nikah ceremony, and Tunku Ismail and Khaleeda were pronounced man and wife with only one vow.

Prior to the akad nikah, a brief engagement ceremony was held between the couple where Tunku Ismail's sister Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah slipped a ring onto Khaleeda's finger.

Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Zarith were seen leaving the palace grounds after the ceremony ended at around 11.45am.

Tunku Ismail, 30, wearing a white Teluk Belangah baju Melayu with black pants and songket samping and Khaleeda, dressed in a white lace baju kurung, left the palace grounds soon after.

While the akad nikah was a private affair, the istiadat persandingan and a royal banquet to commemorate their matrimony will be held on Nov 8 at Istana Besar and will be shown live on large screens at Dataran Bandaraya here.

Among the guests invited to the banquet are Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long and other Cabinet ministers and MPs from Johor.
