Johor princess and Dutch fiance share love of football

JOHOR BARU - Aug 14 will be a very special date for the Johor royal family.

It is not only the birthday of the Permaisuri of Johor, but also the wedding date for their only daughter Princess Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Ibrahim.

The 31-year-old princess, described as friendly and approachable, will be tying the knot with Dennis Muhammad Abdullah, the marketing manager of Tampines Rovers Football Club in Singapore.

The couple, who are rather reserved about their private lives, share a passion for football.

Born here on April 8, 1986, Tunku Aminah is the second of six siblings and the only daughter of Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah.

Tunku Aminah, who loves horse riding, hiking and jogging, has been active in charity work, including visiting victims of natural disasters, fire and floods.

She is also the royal patron of the Johor Baru Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Johor Baru International Festival City, besides her appointment as the JDT Football Club president last year.

Her soon-to-be husband was born as Dennis Verbaas on May 1, 1989, in Lisse, a town near Amsterdam, Holland.

He became a semi-professional footballer for Lisse and VV Katwijk football clubs.

He worked as the JDT Concept Store and Cafe manager before becoming the marketing manager of Tampines Rovers Football Club in Singapore. Dennis embraced Islam on May 31, 2015.

Johor Royal Council president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli announced the wedding here yesterday, and said Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Zarith had consented and given their blessing for the wedding.

"His Royal Highness has consented to state Mufti Datuk Muhammad Tahrir Shamsudin as his official representative to conduct the solemnisation," he added.

Abdul Rahim said that the state ceremonial flag will be raised on Aug 8 to mark the beginning of the royal wedding and a tahlil and thanksgiving prayer will be held at Masjid Pasir Pelangi at 6.30pm on Aug 10.
