Johor Umno chief: Mahathir quitting will not resolve anything

JOHOR BARU: Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's action to quit Umno will not help resolve anything.

He said the decision by Dr Mahathir was unfortunate for the party.

Mohamed Khaled, who is the Johor Umno chief, said if Dr Mahathir wanted to bring down Najib, he should do it through the party election process and not from outside Umno.

"We don't simply leave Umno if we don't like certain leaders. Members should be loyal to the party because it will remain but leaders come and go," he said after attending the Exco Awayday 2016 event at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre yesterday.

In Putrajaya, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Dr Mahathir's decision to leave would not affect the party.

"We see an increase in the number of Umno members every month and it will not affect the party," he told reporters after a meeting with FT MPs here yesterday.

He said he had not received the official resignation letter from Dr Mahathir and as such, did not want to comment further.

The former prime minister announced on Monday that he and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Ali had resigned from the party.
