IPOH - The five-year-old girl who was suspected of being brutally caned by her mother has died after 11 days in a coma at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here.
She died at the paediatric intensive care unit, without regaining consciousness, at about 2.20pm yesterday.
Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said police were awaiting the medical report on the girl's death.
"A post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow (today)," he said.
On Aug 15, the girl's father had taken her to the hospital. She had no pulse on arrival but was resuscitated.
The attending physician alerted police after noticing bruises and lacerations all over the girl's head and body.
The parents were subsequently arrested, but only her 30-year-old mother Chong Mee Chin was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt under Section 325 of the Penal Code and with abuse under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.
The housewife pleaded not guilty to both offences.
