Fuel prices in Malaysia rise a third time in 4 weeks as US-Iran conflict reignites

Announcing the adjusted petrol and diesel prices for the period of Sept 10 to 16, the finance ministry said retail prices for unsubsidised Ron95, Ron97 and diesel will each increase by 25 sen per litre.
Prices for the three fuel types fell by 5sen per litre in the preceding week.
The ministry attributed this to hikes in global crude oil prices during the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) pricing period.
Malaysia uses the APM formula — introduced in 1983 to stabilise prices based on market fluctuations — when determining weekly petrol prices.

Following the latest round of pricing, the new prices for unsubsidised Ron95, Ron97, and diesel are RM4.02 (S$1.25), RM4.50 and RM4.92 per litre, respectively.
Looking ahead, the ministry cautioned that geopolitical risk premiums on global oil supplies are increasing alongside ongoing retaliatory attacks between the US and Iran.
Concurrently, the global refined petroleum products market remains tight owing to disruptions to refining capacity such as in Russia.
It also noted that diesel prices have risen faster than crude oil due to production constraints and dwindling inventories.
"If this situation continues, dwindling inventories and tighter supply of refined petroleum products could (further) increase the risk premiums on global gasoline and diesel prices," the ministry said.
