KUALA LUMPUR - The Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu on Sept 16 had cost the police nearly double that of the two-day Bersih 4 rally held on Aug 29.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said police had carried out thorough preparations to keep both gatherings under control.

"For Bersih 4, police had deployed 191 officers and 2,419 other personnel throughout the two days, and the total cost was RM2,737,440 (S$899,741.78).

"For Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu, 263 officers and 3,648 other personnel were directly involved in handling the gathering, and the total cost was RM4,500,927.50," he said in a written reply to Anthony Loke (DAP-Seremban).

At a press conference in Parliament on Tuesday, Loke urged police to stop any gathering from the start if it was found to be a threat to public order.
