KAJANG, Malaysia - A moment of rage over his daily medication led to a man bludgeoning his 76-year-old mother to death with a hammer at their house in Cheras here.
The 37-year-old man contacted the police on Tuesday, admitting that he had killed someone inside the single-storey house, a source close to the investigation said.
"When we arrived there, we found a woman sprawled underneath an arch separating the kitchen and the living room," he said.
"Blood was oozing from her head, leading us to believe that she was struck on the skull.
"The hammer, believed to have been used to hit her, was found in the living room."
According to the source, the suspect was in bloodstained clothes when met at the house.
Police brought him to the Kajang district police headquarters to have his statement recorded.
The source said statements taken from other family members revealed that the suspect suffered brain injuries in an accident about 10 years ago.
"They said he was receiving treatment for his condition at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM).
"According to them, he becomes 'unstable' if he misses his medication. However, we are still waiting for a report from HUKM before establishing possible motives for the incident," the source added.
It is learnt that the suspect was living with his father and brother in the same house while his mother and sister stayed in another place nearby.
It is believed that his mother was at the house on Tuesday morning to help him with his medication, part of their daily routine.
He is said to have struck his mother with the hammer after they got into an argument over his refusal to take his medication.
The tragedy shocked neighbours, who described him as quiet and hardworking and a filial son. They also said he was unemployed.
