KOTA KINABALU - A factory operator has been charged at a magistrate's court here with possessing materials related to terrorism.

Zainal Sadim, 35, nodded when the charge was read out before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun yesterday.

However, no plea was recorded.

He is accused of being in possession of materials related to the Islamic State (IS) at the workers' quarters of Syarikat Eng Hai Interior Decorating Co in Penampang near here at 8.35am on Nov 16.

Zainal faces up to seven years in jail or a fine under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code.

The court fixed Jan 17 for mention after deputy public prosecutor Gan Peng Kun said the investigating officer needed to commute between Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur where he had two other cases.

The court also ordered Zainal to be remanded pending mention of the case.
