Mentally ill man rescued after jumping into the sea naked

KOTA KINABALU - A man who has just completed three weeks of psychiatric treatment jumped naked into the sea.

He was rescued.

Earlier, at 6pm on Feb 1, the 35-year-old was said to have been waiting for a bus back to his hometown of Beaufort.

However, while waiting with his mother, he told her that he needed to use the bathroom and walked off.

He did not return.

Two days later, police received a report about a man jumping into the sea at the Sabah port here.

"The man was found with broken knees and injuries to his forehead, believed to have been caused from hitting the rocks underwater," said Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra in a statement here.

Apparently, the man suffered from depression.

He had not taken his medication after he was released from Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang, said ACP Chandra.

The man is being treated for his injuries.
