More police, army to weed out illegals, stem illegal land clearing in Cameron Highlands

Serdang - Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has ordered more police and army personnel to be sent to Cameron Highlands to weed out illegals and stop illegal land clearing.

The Prime Minister said he had discussed the matter with Pahang's Sultan Ahmad Shah, and that the Tuanku had suggested that the authorities carry out raids at night.

The Sultan believed it was under cover of darkness that land was illegally cleared.

"I have ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the army to send additional troops to do thorough patrolling at night and act if they come upon illegal activities," Najib said at a press conference after launching the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA 2014) here yesterday.

Sultan Ahmad had called for support from the Federal Government to flush out illegal immigrants in the highlands after a briefing at the Cameron Highlands District and Land Office in Tanah Rata on Thursday.

Najib said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, as chairman of the task force looking into illegal land clearing in Camerons, would visit the highlands tomorrow with the Pahang Mentri Besar.

Najib said the authorities needed to take stern action against the culprits and improve weaknesses in enforcement.
