Mum hears of son's death while on holiday

SERDANG - Chin Yeong Peng's mother hears of his death while she was holidaying in Australia. And she had to make the heart-wrenching call home to inform her husband.

The 54-year-old hardware business owner, who wished only to be known as Chin, was shattered when he received his wife's call about the death of their only child in an accident during a school trip.

Yeong Peng, 17, was crushed to death when the bus he was in overturned near Kg Nanding, Hulu Langat, yesterday.

Four other students were also injured in the accident.

When met at the Serdang Hospital mortuary, Chin told reporters that Yeong Peng, who had two older stepsisters, was his only son.

He said his wife booked a flight home as soon as she had received the news. She arrives in Singapore and then Kuala Lumpur today.

When asked if he would be seeking any legal redress against the school or bus company, he said: "For now all my attention is on my son."

Also present at the mortuary was chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association Kenny Tan, 49, who said he was there to lend Chin a helping hand.
