Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has condemned the attack on Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad at Parliament on Thursday.

"I view the incident at Parliament today and any act of violence against any member of the Dewan Rakyat seriously," said Najib in a tweet.

"We must respect the parliamentary institution," he said, adding that the incident was under investigation and he was confident that the police would complete the investigation as quickly as possible.

Khalid was swarmed by a group of 20 men and women as soon as he got out of his car next to the entrance at Parliament.

A physical scuffle ensued and one of the group members tried to punch the Opposition lawmaker, who was quickly surrounded by security personnel and escorted into Parliament.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh confirmed that the son of Pasir Salak MP Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman was among 10 men involved in the fracas and urged those involved to surrender themselves as soon as possible.

The incident is believed to be in retaliation to Khalid calling Tajuddin "menteri sial" (damned minister) at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.
