KUALA LUMPUR - Over three million Malaysians who are eligible to vote have yet to register with the Election Commission.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said a total of 3,772,149 people have not registered to vote as of March 2017.

"In addition to that, the Election Commission has received 1,454 objections (to voter registrations) from January to March 2017," he said in a Parliament reply on Monday.

He said any person in possession of a temporary Malaysian identification card will not be eligible to vote in a general election or by-elections as they were not qualified as citizens.

The Pekan MP was responding to questions from Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto who asked for the numbers of unregistered voters according to their race and ethnicities.

The DAP lawmaker had also asked whether people with temporary ICs would qualify to vote.
