Najib: Umno still relevant

TAIPING - UMNO, which is celebrating its 68th year this Sunday, is very much relevant, superior and gallant.

Its president, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said the party was capable of undergoing transformation and willing to adapt itself to its surroundings.

Using a human being as an analogy, Najib said a person who reached 68 years of age would no longer be as strong or energetic as compared with his younger days.

"However, Umno proves just otherwise. At 68, the party remains relevant, superior and gallant until today and for years to come.

"The evidence of Umno's strength and might was proved in the 13th General Election when we, as one party, garnered 88 parliamentary seats compared with DAP, Pas and PKR, which obtained 89 seats," he said at the launch of Rumah Umno Taiping here yesterday.

Present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis and Umno Taiping division chief Datuk Ahmad Shalimin Ahmad Shaffie.

Najib said he was mindful that Umno, as an age-long party, was bound to face challenges and problems.

"This, we have to realise so that the process of renewal, improvement and self-evaluation can be done constantly to ensure Umno remains relevant and is seen as a party that can adapt, transform and fulfil the people's aspirations."

Despite obstacles, Umno's struggles and idealism had remained unchanged, he said.

"What we have been fighting for the past 68 years remains unchanged. Our principle is to fight for dignity, religion, race and the country."

Najib said the party needed committed members, whose priority was to uphold the party's struggles.

"When they are faced with a little disappointment, they still place the party above self. They are ever loyal to the party."

Najib said if one was faithful to the party's struggle, he would add value to himself.

"We stress on intellectualism and promote new talents in the party. I believe Umno will continue to be successful."

Rumah Umno Taiping, built at a cost of RM1.7 million, serves as the division's new building. Members have been waiting 40 years for the new building.
