Neighbour killer to be charged

KUALA LUMPUR - A 34-year-old man who allegedly killed an elderly woman during an attempted robbery at her home is expected to be charged in the High Court today.

Victim Swa Kim Chia, 71, was the man's neighbour. The man owed money to loan sharks after his bets during the World Cup football event did not pay off, according to a source.

"The man lived there for four years and they knew each other well. He knocked on her door and asked if he could borrow a pail. The victim let him into her home and went to the bathroom to take the pail. The man then grabbed her, put a knife to her neck and demanded money," the source said.

But the spry old woman screamed and struggled, and was stabbed twice in the chest.

The man ran off with his clothes drenched in blood.

When another neighbour then bumped into him, the man claimed that Swa was killed by a trio of men who had escaped.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy said police investigations did not corroborate the man's version of the incident.

"A shopkeeper said he did not see a trio of men entering or leaving Swa's house.

"The gate was also locked at the time," ACP Munusamy said.
