KUALA LUMPUR - The owner of a nursery in Taman Melati claimed trial in the magistrate court here Tuesday to abusing a toddler in her care. Rozita Awang, 35, was charged with abusing a one-year-eight-month old baby boy in a manner that could cause physical or emotional trauma.
The offence is alleged to have occurred in the living room of Permata Harapan nursery, in Taman Melati at around 11:35am on Oct 10. Rozita, a mother of six, was seen repeatedly looking over her shoulder at her children, who were all present in the courtroom on Tuesday.
Magistrate Siti Shakirah Mohtaruddin allowed bail in consideration of Rozita's children, and fixed Dec 10 for next mention.
It was reported that Rozita was one of three people investigated in relation to the alleged abuse at the nursery which came to light after footage recorded by a camera hidden in the bag of a concerned parent was circulated on the Internet.
The footage showed the child being slapped and beaten by the nannies. The parent has lodged a police report and contacted a local television station.
