Painful ordeal as girl's leg gets stuck in manhole

Firemen using a hydraulic spreader to force the grates apart and free Nur Alya at Taman Aman.

ALOR SETAR - An 11-year-old girl whose leg was stuck in a manhole grating spent an hour crying in pain while waiting to be freed.

Nur Alya Nabilah Zamri, a Year Three pupil at SK Titi Gajah, was out buying breakfast with her grandparents in Taman Aman near here when her right foot got stuck in the opening of the grating.

"It was very painful. Many people came to help me," she said after receiving outpatient treatment at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Alor Setar Fire and Rescue Deportment senior fire officer Mohamad Mahyuddin said a hydraulic spreader was used to force the grates apart.

"We took about four minutes to free the girl," he said.

Food stall operator Ku Om Ku Murat, 61, said that many children have had their legs caught in the grating.

"I hope the city council will do something to prevent such incidents from happening again," he said.
