Retired teacher drowns after his vehicle plunges into fast-moving drain

KOTA KINABALU: A retired teacher drowned after the four-wheel drive pickup truck he was driving through a flooded road plunged into a fast-flowing drain.

He drowned in his vehicle along KM26 of the Beaufort-Sipitang trunk road late Tuesday.

Beaufort police chief Deputy Supt Azmir Abd Razak said Adzrose Gamanie, 63, had died by the time firemen managed to pull him out of his flooded vehicle following the 10.30pm mishap.

He said that Adzrose was on his way home to Kampung Lingkungan in Beaufort from a trip to Sipitang when the incident occurred.

"He was believed to have been trapped in the vehicle as water filled up the cabin rapidly," Azmir added.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department operations chief Khatizah Rahaban said 24 firemen from Sipitang and Beaufort had rushed to the scene.
