KUALA LUMPUR - A 47-year-old auditor and her sister claimed that they spent about RM300,000 (S$97,209) on hair treatment that failed to produce results.
Elizabeth Chow, 47, from Sungai Buloh, Selangor, said they are taking legal action against the hair care centre based in Petaling Jaya.
She said she spent RM264,048 in 13 credit card payments while her sister Margaret, 56, spent RM30,823.73 on various packages offered by the centre.
Elizabeth said she first received an email promoting hair care with a free trial and had approached the centre located in a shopping centre.
She said the centre convinced her to sign up for several hair care packages, such as for treatment for dandruff, hair care, hair weave and herbalogy worth RM12,910.80 on Dec 27 last year.
After going to the centre 31 times for the treatment, Elizabeth was told that her scalp was infected with bacteria and also needed treatment.
"I don't think I have bacteria on my scalp and they told me that I will feel itchy but I did not feel any itchiness," she told a press conference at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department Thursday.
Suspecting something amiss, Elizabeth sought another opinion at a dermatologist, who confirmed that she was not suffering from bacterial infection.
She said she approached the centre's head office to ask for refunds but was told to continue with the treatments.
The sisters lodged reports at the Damansara police station Thursday.
Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong urged people not to be duped by beauty treatments.
"If there is bacterial infection, please seek a second opinion with a qualified skin specialist," he said.
Last year, the department received 11 similar complaints - nine on facial treatments and two on fitness packages. The victims were all female.
The packages cost RM3,000 to RM20,000.
There were two complaints on facial treatment and one on hair problem this year.
