Study on CCTVs for federal buildings

Alor Star - The government is studying the possibility of installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all federal buildings.

Prime Minister's Department's Property Management Division secretary Norazman Othman said the study was being done as there was a need for CCTVs to ensure the safety and security of occupants of the buildings.

He said CCTV cameras would also help protect the properties.

Norazman said even though CCTV cameras were not the only solution in ensuring safety, it would act as a deterrent and would also help the authorities when investigations need to be conducted.

"Yes, it is quite costly to install CCTVs at all the buildings but the government is willing as long as they are useful in protecting the people," he said after breaking fast with heads of federal buildings in the state and media representatives here on Thursday.

There are 10 federal buildings in the northern states -- four in Penang and three each in Kedah and Perlis.

Norazman also announced that the property management division would be introducing the MySMS service at every government-owned building from Aug 1.

He said occupants or customers of government-owned buildings could send complaints through the short messaging service (SMS) and multimedia messaging service (MMS) to the division and building maintenance department.

Complaints could be sent to 15888, he said, and for a start, the division would be focusing on the cafe services at those buildings, particularly on the level of hygiene and ensure food prices were fair.

"This service will enable us to respond swiftly whenever a complaint is received."
