BENTONG, Malaysia - A man who went to the district police headquarters here to lodge a report against his younger sibling was stunned when informed that his brother had committed suicide several minutes earlier.
The victim, Lam Chiew Kok, believed to be mentally ill, had taken police personnel by surprise when he jumped to his death from the second floor of the headquarters at 7.15pm on Friday.
In the incident, the 44-year-old victim from Kampung Perting here caused a commotion at the ground floor when he demanded the officer on duty to shoot him saying he wanted to die.
However, the officer managed to calm him down. Lam then requested for some water and a cigarette.
After finishing his cigarette, he suddenly dashed towards the staircase and ran to the second floor before jumping over the railing.
District police chief Superintendent Mohamad Mansor Mohd Nor said Lam suffered severe head injuries due to the fall and was rushed to the Bentong Hospital but he died while receiving treatment about 8.15pm.
Mansor said several minutes after the incident, the victim's elder brother who is in his late 40s arrived at the police station to lodge a report claiming Lam had threatened to kill their mother and burn down the family's house.
"The brother was taken aback when informed that Lam had jumped from the building. He informed us that his brother was mentally unstable.
"Initial investigations revealed the victim had come to the police station after blackmailing his mother," he said, adding the case was classified as sudden death.
