Teen missing after being swept away at Langkawi beach

LANGKAWI - An 18-year-old teenager is missing after he was swept away by strong currents at Pantai Cenang here Wednesday.

In a statement, Kedah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Nor Hafizah Mohammed Lukman said the missing teen, Max Ng Yik Hang, aged 18, from Selangor, was with two friends aged 15 and 16 respectively.

"From public information obtained by the commander of the search and rescue operation Fire Superintendent Mohd Fadzlullah Mohd Noor, the three Chinese teenagers were swimming at the beach when they were washed away by a strong current or wave," she said.

"Two of them were rescued by the public but the other teen was missing.

"The search and rescue operation is still ongoing," she said.

She said after receiving distress calls at about 3.54pm, rescue personnel arrived at the beach, which is about 20km away from the Persiaran Putra Fire Station, at 4.01pm.

"A surface search was carried out by rescuers comprising personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Malaysian Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and Civil Defence Force (APM)," she said.

MMEA northern region director First Admiral Tan Kok Kwee in a statement late Wednesday confirmed the incident.

He also said that search and rescue efforts would be standing down for the day and would continue Thursday morning.
