Teen suspect injured in Kedah police car chase

MALAYSIA - A car chase in Kedah ended in bloody drama.

A suspect believed to be a member of an armed gang of robbers was injured after police were forced to fire at his vehicle.

The incident took place around 11pm, on Thursday night.

The suspect, 18, suffered two gunshot wounds in the 11pm incident.

A police patrol car on crime prevention rounds spotted three men behaving suspiciously in a Proton Gen2, The New Straits Times reported.

The police officers then ordered the driver to stop after matching the vehicle's registration number to that of a car reportedly used during a robbery.

But the driver drove off, resulting in the car chase, The Star reported.

Kuala Muda Assistant Commissioner Khalil Ariffin said the driver tried to ram the police car, forcing police personnel to fire a warning shot.

Said ACP Khalil: "The policemen fired another three shots at the car and the driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle and crashed after one of bullets hit a wheel."

He said the youth, who was sitting in the rear passenger seat, was hit on his right shoulder and right thigh.

Said ACP Khalil: "Upon seeing their friend injured, the two other men fled the scene on foot."

He added that police found two parangs, sharp objects and some drugs inside the car.

He added that the suspect, who had a criminal record, was warded and in a stable condition.
