BUKIT MERTAJAM, Malaysia - A two-year-old girl burnt to death when her house caught fire in Jalan Rozhan here.
Nurul Adryana Lateesha Mohamad Asry (pic) was in the house with her grandmother Siti Zaynah Yaakob, 74, and four-year-old brother when the incident occurred at around 11am yesterday.
Siti Zaynah said she was in the living room upstairs when she started to feel an intense heat in the semi-wooden two-storey house.
"I was shocked to see the fire had spread to the ground floor.
"I ran out to seek help. Halfway, I suddenly remembered that my granddaughter was still inside, but I could not do anything as the house was already up in flames," she said in between tears at the scene.
Siti Zaynah added that the four-year-old brother was safe as he was playing outside the house when the fire started.
Nurul Adryana's mother Siti Sawani Othman was too distraught to speak to reporters and had to be consoled by family members.
It was learnt that seven people were staying in the house - the girl and her three siblings, her parents and grandmother.
The parents were at work and the two older siblings were in primary school at the time of the incident.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Azmi Tamat said they received a distress call at 11am and the first fire team reached the scene seven minutes later.
"When we reached the scene, the entire structure was already razed. We managed to extinguish the fire by 11.20am and the charred remains of the little girl was found shortly after."
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
