Umno leaders dismiss claim of plot to oust Najib

PETALING JAYA - Umno supreme council members have dismissed the existence of a plot to oust Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as Prime Minister.

"It is all rubbish. The PM is aware that I am here on duty," Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said in a telephone interview from Milan, Italy, during an official visit yesterday.

In a blog posting on Sunday, former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said he was told that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had met Umno bigwigs, including Nazri and Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, in Italy to discuss handing over the premiership to Muhyiddin.

Nazri said his visit to Dubai and Milan was approved by the Cabinet in a meeting chaired by Najib.

Supreme council member Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin also said the ministers were there solely for work.

"They were invited to attend a trade exhibition," he said.

When asked if he supported Najib, Nazri said that he was taught to always support the leader, adding that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad gave him this advice back when Tun Musa Hitam and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah teamed up to try and oust Dr Mahathir.

"The PM (Najib) has said that he was elected by the people and party members, and that he will not stand down.

"As far as I am concerned, I am heeding the advice of Tun M who said that one ship must have one captain.

"He said that if we stick to the captain, the ship will be safe - and that captain is Najib," he said.

Umno supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi also said the Najib-Muhyiddin pairing was among the strongest ever and brushed aside rumours of a plot to topple Najib.

"I personally feel that this team is the best. To me, they have chemistry," he said.

He added that supreme council members were unanimous in their support of Najib.
