Wan Azizah picked as she is PKR chief, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said PKR nominated Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the next Selangor mentri besar because she is the party president and has a track record of being a parliamentary opposition leader.

"It is not because she happens to be my wife," the PKR advisor told reporters on the sidelines of his defamation suit against Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman at the Kuala Lumpur court complex here yesterday.

On Tuesday, following an order by the Sultan of Selangor for each of the Pakatan Rakyat parties to submit more than two names as the potential new mentri besar, PKR and DAP said they were standing by their decision to nominate only Dr Wan Azizah as the candidate.

Anwar had previously said a letter nominating only his wife for the position had been sent to the Palace. He had signed the letter together with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.

Reiterating their stand yesterday, Anwar said the Pakatan alliance in Selangor had also submitted a single name to the palace after last year's general election, which was that of Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

He said all issues pertaining to the issue had been duly considered and discussed at a Pakatan presidential meeting on Aug 17.

Asked if he was afraid PAS would submit another name, Anwar said in the spirit of coalition among the Pakatan parties, the MB's seat would be held by a PKR representative.
