KOTA KINABALU - A holidaying family of six had a brush with death when a water heater exploded in their Kinabalu Park chalet.
The sleeping family was awakened by a loud explosion at 2.30am yesterday that blew the roof off and caused some damage inside the building.
They managed to rush out of the chalet, which was located on the foot of Mount Kinabalu, about 80km from the state capital.
Sabah Parks officials and staff of the privately-operated accommodation facilities at Kinabalu Park went to assist the family to move into another chalet.
Ranau district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said initial investigations found that the explosion was caused by a faulty water heater placed above the ceiling of the chalet.
"A police team rushed there and our men called in the Ranau Fire and Rescue Service Department," he said.
According to witnesses, the guests were resting after Christmas celebrations when the explosion shook their chalets, too.
