Worker returns $18,600 ring

Some people might have been tempted by the bling, but not this honest housekeeper.

When Hatten Hotel Malacca worker Khua Kung Thang found a diamond ring worth RM48,000 ($18,600) left behind by a Singaporean woman, the 24-year-old did the right thing - he returned it.

The woman, who requested anonymity, stayed in the hotel at Jalan Merdeka, Malacca, for three days on a business trip.

Mr Khua, who is from Myanmar, was performing routine housekeeping duties when he spotted the diamond ring in the groove of a chair inside the hotel room.

Malaysian newspaper The Star said the woman did not realise that she had left her ring in the room when she checked out on Sunday.

Mr Khua, who has been working in the hotel for two months, placed the ring on the bedside table before informing his superiors of the find.

GUEST HAD LEFT

The hotel then informed the guest that her ring was found in the room on the same day as she was driving back to Singapore.

The woman praised Mr Khua in a review on travel website Trip Advisor several days ago. She wrote: "Our special thanks go to all staff, especially Mr Khua Kung Thang who did... housekeeping and found the diamond ring...

"Scepticism and pessimism put to rest here."

The hotel's general manager Chuck Kassim told The New Paper on Friday that it believes in the trustworthiness of its staff.

He said: "For this exceptional example, we will recognise Mr Khua at our quarterly staff gathering where he would be given a certificate of recognition and a monetary reward.

"He is a shining example for others."
